It 22 is a feature rich alternative to cloud vendors' web storage 23 interfaces. [Over 40 cloud storage products](#providers) support 24 rclone including S3 object stores, business & consumer file storage 25 services, as well as standard transfer protocols. 26 27 Rclone has powerful cloud equivalents to the unix commands rsync, cp, 28 mv, mount, ls, ncdu, tree, rm, and cat. Rclone's familiar syntax 29 includes shell pipeline support, and `--dry-run` protection. It is 30 used at the command line, in scripts or via its [API](/rc). 31 32 Users call rclone *"The Swiss army knife of cloud storage"*, and 33 *"Technology indistinguishable from magic"*. 34 35 Rclone really looks after your data. It preserves timestamps and 36 verifies checksums at all times. Transfers over limited bandwidth; 37 intermittent connections, or subject to quota can be restarted, from 38 the last good file transferred. You can 39 [check](/commands/rclone_check/) the integrity of your files. Where 40 possible, rclone employs server side transfers to minimise local 41 bandwidth use and transfers from one provider to another without 42 using local disk. 43 44 Virtual backends wrap local and cloud file systems to apply 45 [encryption](/crypt/), 46 [caching](/cache/), 47 [chunking](/chunker/) and 48 [joining](/union/). 49 50 Rclone [mounts](/commands/rclone_mount/) any local, cloud or 51 virtual filesystem as a disk on Windows, 52 macOS, linux and FreeBSD, and also serves these over 53 [SFTP](/commands/rclone_serve_sftp/), 54 [HTTP](/commands/rclone_serve_http/), 55 [WebDAV](/commands/rclone_serve_webdav/), 56 [FTP](/commands/rclone_serve_ftp/) and 57 [DLNA](/commands/rclone_serve_dlna/). 58 59 Rclone is mature, open source software originally inspired by rsync 60 and written in [Go](https://golang.org). The friendly support 61 community are familiar with varied use cases. Official Ubuntu, Debian, 62 Fedora, Brew and Chocolatey repos. include rclone. For the latest 63 version [downloading from rclone.org](/downloads/) is recommended. 64 65 Rclone is widely used on Linux, Windows and Mac. Third party 66 developers create innovative backup, restore, GUI and business 67 process solutions using the rclone command line or API. 68 69 Rclone does the heavy lifting of communicating with cloud storage. 70 71 ## What can rclone do for you? {#what} 72 73 Rclone helps you: 74 75 - Backup (and encrypt) files to cloud storage 76 - Restore (and decrypt) files from cloud storage 77 - Mirror cloud data to other cloud services or locally 78 - Migrate data to cloud, or between cloud storage vendors 79 - Mount multiple, encrypted, cached or diverse cloud storage as a disk 80 - Analyse and account for data held on cloud storage using [lsf](/commands/rclone_lsf/), [ljson](/commands/rclone_lsjson/), [size](/commands/rclone_size/), [ncdu](/commands/rclone_ncdu/) 81 - [Union](/union/) file systems together to present multiple local and/or cloud file systems as one 82 83 ## Features {#features} 84 85 - Transfers 86 - MD5, SHA1 hashes are checked at all times for file integrity 87 - Timestamps are preserved on files 88 - Operations can be restarted at any time 89 - Can be to and from network, eg two different cloud providers 90 - Can use multi-threaded downloads to local disk 91 - [Copy](/commands/rclone_copy/) new or changed files to cloud storage 92 - [Sync](/commands/rclone_sync/) (one way) to make a directory identical 93 - [Move](/commands/rclone_move/) files to cloud storage deleting the local after verification 94 - [Check](/commands/rclone_check/) hashes and for missing/extra files 95 - [Mount](/commands/rclone_mount/) your cloud storage as a network disk 96 - [Serve](/commands/rclone_serve/) local or remote files over [HTTP](/commands/rclone_serve_http/)/[WebDav](/commands/rclone_serve_webdav/)/[FTP](/commands/rclone_serve_ftp/)/[SFTP](/commands/rclone_serve_sftp/)/[dlna](/commands/rclone_serve_dlna/) 97 - Experimental [Web based GUI](/gui/) 98 99 ## Supported providers {#providers} 100 101 (There are many others, built on standard protocols such as 102 WebDAV or S3, that work out of the box.) 103 104
