Some of the 21 output, e.g., image ID, is truncated, for space reasons. However the truncated 22 image ID, and often the first few characters, are enough to be used in other 23 Docker commands that use the image ID. The output includes repository, tag, image 24 ID, date created and the virtual size. 25 26 The title REPOSITORY for the first title may seem confusing. It is essentially 27 the image name. However, because you can tag a specific image, and multiple tags 28 (image instances) can be associated with a single name, the name is really a 29 repository for all tagged images of the same name. For example consider an image 30 called fedora. It may be tagged with 18, 19, or 20, etc. to manage different 31 versions. 32 33 # OPTIONS 34 **-a**, **--all**=*true*|*false* 35 Show all images (by default filter out the intermediate image layers). The default is *false*. 36 37 **--digests**=*true*|*false* 38 Show image digests. The default is *false*. 39 40 **-f**, **--filter**=[] 41 Filters the output. The dangling=true filter finds unused images. While label=com.foo=amd64 filters for images with a com.foo value of amd64. The label=com.foo filter finds images with the label com.foo of any value. 42 43 **--format**="*TEMPLATE*" 44 Pretty-print containers using a Go template. 45 Valid placeholders: 46 .ID - Image ID 47 .Repository - Image repository 48 .Tag - Image tag 49 .Digest - Image digest 50 .CreatedSince - Elapsed time since the image was created. 51 .CreatedAt - Time when the image was created.. 52 .Size - Image disk size. 53 54 **--help** 55 Print usage statement 56 57 **--no-trunc**=*true*|*false* 58 Don't truncate output. The default is *false*. 59 60 **-q**, **--quiet**=*true*|*false* 61 Only show numeric IDs. The default is *false*. 62 63 # EXAMPLES 64 65 ## Listing the images 66 67 To list the images in a local repository (not the registry) run: 68 69 docker images 70 71 The list will contain the image repository name, a tag for the image, and an 72 image ID, when it was created and its virtual size. Columns: REPOSITORY, TAG, 73 IMAGE ID, CREATED, and SIZE. 74 75 The `docker images` command takes an optional `[REPOSITORY[:TAG]]` argument 76 that restricts the list to images that match the argument. If you specify 77 `REPOSITORY`but no `TAG`, the `docker images` command lists all images in the 78 given repository. 79 80 docker images java 81 82 The `[REPOSITORY[:TAG]]` value must be an "exact match". This means that, for example, 83 `docker images jav` does not match the image `java`. 84 85 If both `REPOSITORY` and `TAG` are provided, only images matching that 86 repository and tag are listed. To find all local images in the "java" 87 repository with tag "8" you can use: 88 89 docker images java:8 90 91 To get a verbose list of images which contains all the intermediate images 92 used in builds use **-a**: 93 94 docker images -a 95 96 Previously, the docker images command supported the --tree and --dot arguments, 97 which displayed different visualizations of the image data. Docker core removed 98 this functionality in the 1.7 version. If you liked this functionality, you can 99 still find it in the third-party dockviz tool: https://github.com/justone/dockviz. 100 101 ## Listing only the shortened image IDs 102 103 Listing just the shortened image IDs. This can be useful for some automated 104 tools. 105 106 docker images -q 107 108 # HISTORY 109 April 2014, Originally compiled by William Henry (whenry at redhat dot com) 110 based on docker.com source material and internal work. 111 June 2014, updated by Sven Dowideit <SvenDowideit@home.org.au>
